College requires a whole new level of Executive Function – this program will help you, the parent, understand the various executive function demands placed on college students, and give you tools to help your child develop those skills. We will review some of the more common executive function demands such as:
* Managing their time when they have more unstructured hours in the day (and fewer people telling them how to use those hours)
* Tracking assignment deadlines across multiple classes
* Keeping themselves organized, both study materials and living space
* Knowing when they don’t understand something, and recognizing that they need help
* Asking for help and knowing who/where to go to for that help
* Regulating their frustrations not only with difficult classes/assignments, but also with difficult professors or university systems
The seminar will also focus on the importance of developing your child’s metacognition (self-awareness), so that they can individualize their study skills and strategies to their specific needs and environment and be prepared to independently implement them while in college. Participants will have the opportunity to share their specific concerns and areas of interest prior to the seminar so that the information provided will be more catered to their needs. They will also have the benefit of discussing the information presented in both small groups and a Q&A session. This talk is geared to parents with high school aged children not already in college.
