Concord Town History & Guide Training Class Begins

February 26, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

- $175

We are surrounded by the past in Concord. In this course, we will learn to see it all around us. As we learn about Concord’s history, we also learn about how this history has shaped the present. This course is for all local citizens who want to know about this “estimable place” we call home. This course, which originated through town efforts starting in 1904 to ensure a good visitor experience, provides a wealth of information about Concord and its place in American history. In addition to town history, the course will also cover the techniques of interpreting cultural history to an audience.

Our topics include:

Pre-Contact To 1700: Living with the Land
1700-1775: The Colonial Community
1775-1835: Shots Heard Around The World
1835-1860: The World Of The Writers
1860-1900: Challenges & Changes – Civil War to Century’s end
1900-1976: At Home in the World
Interpretation class
There are seven Monday night classes (beginning February 26), a session at the Town Archives (Concord Free Public Library, Sat, Mar 17, 8:30-10 am) and an afternoon field session on Sun, Apr 8, 1-4 pm. Those applying for a Town Guide license must complete this course and pass an exam on Concord history and the essentials of guiding. A primary text for the course is Historic Concord (included in fee). This will be supplemented with additional readings, archival material, audio-visuals and more.
