The orchestra, conducted by Music Director Zeke Fetrow, performs Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story Overture, Carl Nielsen’s Concerto for Flute, and César Franck’s Symphony in D Minor. Susan Jackson, principal flute of the Concord Orchestra, is the soloist for the Nielsen Flute Concerto. A pre-concert talk is scheduled for 7:15pm.
Bernstein’s longtime associate and orchestrator Maurice Peress arranged the West Side Story Overture for full symphony orchestra, capturing many the musical’s vibrant themes in a high-energy medley.
Danish composer Carl Nielsen wrote the Flute Concerto in 1926. The concerto sometimes sounds like chamber music as the flute soloist has musical conversations with other instruments of the orchestra who play short solos, including a rude bass trombone who keeps interrupting the flute.
Flute soloist Susan Jackson has been the principal flute of Concord Orchestra since 1995. She is a graduate of Tufts University and New England Conservatory where she studied with Claude Monteux and Fenwick Smith. She also performs with the New Hampshire Philharmonic and Carlisle Chamber Orchestra. She is a faculty member at UMass Lowell and the Instrumental Music School of Carlisle and Concord.
French composer César Franck’s dramatic Symphony in D minor, written in 1888, is his best-known symphonic work. Franck was a virtuoso organist, and the first movement goes through a series of modulations that have been compared to a masterful organ improvisation. The second movement is known for a haunting melody played by solo English horn. The haunting melody returns in the final movement, and principal themes from earlier movements come together, blending beautifully.
Tickets for adults and seniors are $25. Admission for youth under 18 is free. For tickets and information, call 978-369-4967 or visit concordorchestra.com.
