Join Joe Palumbo, a Concord town guide, to learn about the history of Indigenous People and African Americans in our town. For over 10,000 years, humans have lived in the area we now know as Concord. With new research and a greater understanding of past events, we open new windows to confront the past and tell fuller stories of all the people of our town. In this talk we will look at the role of Indigenous People, the first generation of self-emancipated African Americans, and the growth of abolitionism. We will discuss the stories of John Jack, Brister Freeman, and Concord’s heroic resident, Pvt. George Washington Dugan, who served in one of the first African American regiments of the Civil War. We will learn how families supported themselves on the land and shaped their destinies as free men and women. There is more to our story than is often told! There is no charge. Please call the COA to sign up or to get a Zoom link at 978-318-3020.
