A Legacy of Farming and Community:
The Verrill Family Shares Stories of Concord Past and Present
Verrill Farm has been a family-run Concord treasure since 1918, currently led by Jennifer Verrill and her parents, Joan and Steve. In addition to the farm’s mission to “nourish the body and soul of our customers”, the Verrills say that owning a business in a community such as Concord is an honor and a privilege. On this 100th anniversary, Jen and Steve join us to discuss the history of Verrill Farm, the community it has built and supported, and the importance of giving back.

JENNIFER VERRILL is a partner at Verrill Farm along with her parents, Joan and Steve Verrill. Growing up on the family farm, Jennifer gained a respect for farming and the importance of land stewardship. Though farming has always been in her blood, she developed a love for food during college, and upon graduation Jen worked for several restaurants and caterers in the Boston area and Rhode Island. She considers providing Legal Seafoods with desserts, being a pastry chef for Aigo Bistro, and being part of a culinary team at the James Beard House in New York as some of her favorite culinary memories. Jen is a member of Les Dames D’escoffier and the Culinary Guild of New England, and holds a degree in sociology from the University of Massachusetts.
STEVE VERRILL grew up on the family farm and attended Concord Public schools. He has been interested in agriculture, conservation, and nature since early childhood. After graduating from Cornell University, he took over the operation of Verrill Farm with his father, Floyd, as a mentoring assistant. Steve met Joan through their mutual work with 4H Clubs and they were soon married. Throughout his career, he has served on many agricultural, conservation, and town boards, associations, and committees. He was the third farmer of the land at 9 Acre Corner to serve as president of the New England Vegetable and Berry Growers Association. Verrill Farm has changed with the times over the years, going from retail milk to wholesale production, followed by pick-your-own vegetables, and finally to an emphasis on freshly picked produce and home-style prepared food. Steve and Joan have received Concord’s “Honored Citizen” award and the “Agricultural Adventurers” Award from the Eastern States Exposition.
