Gather around a roaring outdoor fire for a reading of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s complaints about stoves replacing the open fireplace. In his essay Fire Worship, from "Mosses from an Old Manse", we’ll hear how stoves were destroying social interactions and watch the flames that so enchanted Hawthorne. Be among the first to hear new research uncovering more information about the enslaved people who lived at the Manse and how later residents grappled with questions of enslavement, freedom, and war. From the arrival of British Colonists to the end of the Civil War, we will learn the stories of enslaved people, those who enslaved them, and how later generations chose to ignore or right the inequalities of the past. 45 minutes.

Patriot’s Day Celebration & Parade

Event Layout: The Patriots' Day Parade goes forward rain, snow or muck and covers a route of approximately 2.5 miles. Participants include: Color Guards Cultural and Youth Groups Dignitaries Minuteman Companies Musicians Dignitaries are from neighboring towns, the State, the nation, and several foreign countries with ties to Concord.
