“The Last Picture Show rediscovers a time, a place, a film form—and a small but important part of the American experience.”
– The New York Times
The Concord Film Project returns on Wednesday, June 7 at 7:30pm with the Academy Award-winning 1971 classic The Last Picture Show.
This powerful coming-of-age film tells the story of high school seniors Sonny and Duane, best friends living in a dying Texas town, stumbling though their first, often desperate romantic pursuits, and struggling to envision their future somewhere – anywhere – else.
Directed and co-written by Peter Bogdanovich and adapted from the novel by Larry McMurtry, the film features the breakout role for Cybill Shepherd as small-town beauty Jacy, and Oscar winning performances from Ben Johnson and Cloris Leachman. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards including Best Picture and was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress as part of the National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”
