Author Shelley Drake Hawks will give an illustrated talk based on her new book, The Art of Resistance: Painting by Candlelight in Mao’s China at the Main Library on Thursday, December 14th. The talk will begin at 7 p.m., and will be followed by a book signing.
The book follows the lives of seven painters during China’s Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), a time when they were considered counter-revolutionary and forbidden to paint. Drawing on interviews with the artists and their families and on materials collected during her visits to China, Hawks examines their painting styles, political outlooks, and life experiences.
Shelley Drake Hawks, Ph.D., has taught courses about Chinese history and Chinese art history at Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design, Boston University, University of Massachusetts, Boston, and Mount Holyoke College. She currently teaches art history and world history at Middlesex Community College in Lowell, Massachusetts.
