SUMMARY:On Being Human: Mosaic Meditations by Cynthia Fisher
DESCRIPTION:September 18 – December 20\, 2026 in the Allie Kussin Main Gallery \nOpening Reception: Tuesday\, October 6\, 6 – 8 PM (RSVP appreciated)\nMosaic Activity: during Free Family Day\, Saturday\, October 10\, 2 – 4 PM (registration appreciated)\nArtist Talk: Saturday\, November 7\, 3 – 4 PM (RSVP appreciated) \nDriven by curiosity and a background in Wildlife Biology\, Cynthia Fisher has created varied and philosophical works that seek to elevate mosaics beyond the world of craft and into fine art. Through inspiring cultural conversations\, Fisher aims to engage the viewer in questioning our impact on the natural world. \nUtilizing a wide range of materials\, including vitreous glass and broken pottery\, the tactile and textured nature of the medium forces us to share the space. Prompting questions about how we currently engage with the world around us and how it may engage with us. Through her works\, she explores our environmental impact on our planet\, addressing not only the greatness of human life\, but our responsibility towards the natural world. \n“I do have reasons for hope: our clever brains\, the resilience of nature\, the indomitable human spirit\, and above all\, the commitment of young people when they’re empowered to take action.” – Jane Goodall \nLearn more at theUmbrellaArts.org/being-human \nThe Umbrella Arts Galleries are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Umbrella presents " I and You"
DESCRIPTION:THE STORY\nA homebound teen and an unexpected visitor clash over a Walt Whitman assignment that will lead them to a stunning epiphany. Caroline is sharp-witted\, guarded\, and sardonic as Anthony is athletic\, sensitive\, and popular\, but as they debate ecstatic poetry\, life and love\, youth and mortality\, they discover they are more connected than they may seem. A luminous play from America’s most-produced playwright Lauren Gunderson\, I And You is a genuinely funny\, deeply moving ode to all the unseen ways we are connected.

SUMMARY:The Great Pumpkin Smash
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a smashing good time at the 6th Annual Great Pumpkin Smash at Codman Community Farms! Enjoy a fun day on the farm with pumpkin smashing\, farm fresh food\, ice cream sandwiches\, and live music by the Honey Steelers. This family-friendly event is all about having fun while also making a positive impact on our planet. \nWe’ll have refreshments and snacks available for purchase in the pavilion throughout the event including wood fired cheese or pepperoni pizza by the slice from 12-2pm or until we sell out! \nWhy Smash Your Pumpkins? \nDid you know that composting your Halloween pumpkins can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions? When pumpkins end up in landfills\, they break down and produce methane\, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. Don’t let your Halloween creations meet this grim fate! Give them the chance at a second life by recycling them into soil! \nPrepare your pumpkins for smashing by removing any stickers\, candles\, and other decorations. Please leave your painted pumpkins at home. Suggested donation of $1 per pumpkin to benefit our host\, Codman Community Farms. \nThis event is organized by: Codman Community Farms\, Mothers Out Front Concord and Weston Community Children’s Association (WCCA). \nVolunteers (adults and students) welcome! SUMMARY:A Walking Life: Reflections on Sauntering\, Memory\, and Grace with Jay Vogt
DESCRIPTION:Come with a walking story of your own — you’ll be asked for it. Initially\, Jay Vogt will read from A Walking Life: A Memoir in Seventeen Walks\, including “Sunday Morning Walk\,” a six-mile loop that leaves his Hubbard Street door and passes the bells of First Parish\, the Old Manse\, the Old North Bridge\, and on into the Estabrook Woods where Thoreau sauntered. Other readings range farther — a candlelit march past the White House at fourteen\, five hundred miles of the Camino\, an alpine pass climbed beside his grown daughter. Attendees will also learn how Europeans take “walking holidays” on thousands of miles of public footpaths\, and how anyone in the room could do the same. \nThen\, drawing on forty years as a professional facilitator\, Jay will invite attendees to reflect on what walking has meant in their own lives\, and draw those stories out into the room. Expect to hear from your neighbors as much as from the author. The program closes with an invitation to take The Walking Life Challenge — ask a friend for a walk\, and trade the stories your own walking lives have given you. \nJay Vogt has been walking his whole life — down wooded trails near Baltimore as a boy\, across English moors in the mist\, through five hundred miles in northern Spain\, and up alpine passes beside his grown daughter. A Concord resident since 1994\, he now divides his year between Concord and San Miguel de Allende\, Mexico. \nJay is the founder of Peoplesworth\, a consulting practice for nonprofits and mission-driven organizations\, and the author of two books on leadership and teams. His TEDx talk\, “The Art of Facilitation: Changing the Way the World Meets\,” was the most widely viewed video on the web about facilitation for over a decade.

It was decided that each year\, on Veteran’s Day\, the worn flags would be collected by the Public Ceremonies and Celebrations Committee and retired in an appropriate manner

SUMMARY:Woman of Mystery: The Life and Work of Elizabeth Garver Jordan
DESCRIPTION:Beginning her career as a reporter who became known for her coverage of the 1893 Lizzie Borden murder trial\, Elizabeth Garver Jordan was a late nineteenth-century “influencer.” She used her platforms as a prominent editor\, suffrage activist\, and popular mystery author to shape cultural conversations about women’s lives. Like so many overlooked women of the past\, she deserves rediscovery for the way her life and work cast new light on the revolutions of her era. \nFortuitously\, Jordan is the subject of two recent books\, each exploring different parts of the puzzle she represents. This panel of brief presentations and robust discussion will illuminate Jordan’s fascinating life. The panelists will discuss her pioneering work as a woman journalist\, the story of how she leveraged her professional reputation to campaign for the woman’s vote\, and her prolific career as the author of gripping mystery novels. They will also address Jordan’s personal history\, focusing on how she\, as an unmarried woman living in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries\, forged an unconventional\, boundary-breaking life\, which included a passionate friendship with The Secret Garden author Frances Hodgson Burnett and a rumored marriage proposal from novelist Henry James. Jordan also created a lifelong chosen family by making a home with two other unmarried professional women. Among other adventures\, these three intrepid partners adopted and jointly raised a child — whose own daughter\, Betsy Devine\, now lives in Concord. Betsy will join literary scholars Jane Carr and Lori Harrison-Kahan to explore how the different puzzle pieces of Jordan’s life fit together. \nSpeakers: \nJane Carr and Lori Harrison-Kahan\, co-editors of a Penguin Classics edition of Jordan’s journalism and fiction titled The Case of Lizzie Borden and Other Writings (2024) \nConcordian and Jordan’s namesake\, Betsy Devine (née Elizabeth Jordan Devine)\, who will talk about her personal connection to Jordan’s “family of choice.” \nPresenter Bios \nJane Carr teaches in the Arts\, Communication\, and Media program at Fairleigh Dickinson University. With Lori Harrison-Kahan\, she is the co-editor of The Case of Lizzie Borden and Other Writings\, and her journalism and scholarly writing have appeared in publications including CNN.com\, The Atlantic\, Slate\, Vox\, and American Quarterly. She is a former Senior Editor for Ideas at CNN Opinion and recipient of the New York Press Club Award for Online Commentary. She was an American Council of Learned Societies/Mellon Public Fellow at the think tank New America and has taught literature\, creative writing\, and the humanities at New York University and Manhattanville University. \nBetsy Devine (née Elizabeth Jordan Devine) grew up spending summers at Spreadwings in Western Massachusetts\, the country house of her namesake\, Elizabeth Jordan\, whose bedroom and study were lovingly kept exactly as she had left them. One of the first female grad students at Princeton\, where she studied engineering\, Betsy is the author of two light-heartedly-science books. She is also a singer-songwriter whose poem “If we can keep it here” was one of three ‘highly commended’ by the Concord250 Poetry Project.
