SUMMARY:Buttrick Gardens Online Lecture: Blooms at the Edge of the Battlefield
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free presentation on the Buttrick Gardens at Minute Man National Historical Park. Kathleen Fahey\, Executive Director of the Friends of Minute Man\, will discuss the history and preservation of these beautiful gardens. We’ll view the garden in all four seasons and explore historic images – all from the comfort of home! Please register at https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/JDPx6LSUS5mOV0koby98Jg#/registration. \nBeginning in 1911\, two generations of the Buttrick family tended and enlarged the formal gardens until 1962\, when the National Park Service purchased the property. Stewards of the land since the colonial period\, the Buttrick family was proud that their gardens stood near the historic muster fields of April 19\, 1775. The eclectic gardens feature viewing terraces\, steps leading down to the Concord River\, elegant wrought ironwork\, and brick\, bluestone\, and cobblestone walkways. Framed by ornamental trees and shrubs\, the garden beds contain the Buttrick family’s award-winning iris and daylilies\, colorful spring bulbs\, and perennials that bloom from spring to fall.

SUMMARY:Women in the Age of Revolution
DESCRIPTION:What is freedom? How do we win it? And if it comes – how will we use it? \nJoin scholar\, Lakshmi Bose\, and classical actress\, Poornima Kirby\, for an inspiring exploration of women’s writings and conversations across the age of revolutions – a 70+ year period spanning movements in America\, France and Haiti. Some women fought on the front lines (even loading the cannons!)\, some ran businesses – and in the aftermath of revolution\, some demanded new rights while others encouraged each other to ‘return’ to the home. These conversations were passionate\, varied and contradictory – What does freedom look like for women after monarchy? Should it depend on education\, birth or race? Many of these women declared otherwise – wanting a taste of the freedom they had helped win – even if they were not sure how it could look! Join us as Lakshmi maps a fascinating path through the shape of these revolutions while Poornima leaps in to voice the pamphlets\, letters\, songs and speeches of the women who shaped them. By turns playful\, touching and invigorating\, this combined lecture and theatrical recitation is a thrilling ride through fiery times! \n********* \nLakshmi’s Bio: \nLakshmi Bose (Phd) is an independent artist and former lecturer in political sociology at the University of Cambridge\, where she remains a consultant at the Hannah Arendt Consortium on Crisis and Political Transformation. She works across a variety of mediums\, including theatre\, film\, and visual arts to foster nuanced public conversations around philosophy\, politics\, and social transformation. She also writes and illustrates non-fiction political comics based on her original research on revolution (see The Sociological Review\, Green European Journal). As a facilitator\, she has led a variety of workshops across the UK\, South Africa\, and Europe focusing on preserving oral histories of marginalised groups. \nhttps://sites.google.com/view/lakshmibose/home \n********** \nPoornima Kirby’s Bio: \nPoornima Kirby is a classically trained actress\, writer and director\, specializing in classical and poetic texts\, as well as co-created theater. She studied drama at Vassar College\, and trained in acting and Shakespeare performance at Shakespeare & Co. and London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. Her regional theater credits include Sleep no More with the A.R.T.\, Hamlet with Actors Shakespeare Project\, Daughters of Venus with Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater\, and Much Ado about Nothing with Bay Colony Shakespeare. She has also appeared in several independent films\, commercials\, industrials and voice-overs\, and has worked as a teaching artist in the Boston Public Schools and Tufts Medical Center. She is Artistic Director for Theatre of Eternal Values – America (a branch of an Italy-based international company) where she has written\, directed and performed in several original productions. She is passionate about bringing live theatre directly to audiences where they live\, work and play! DESCRIPTION:Award-winning Firelight Theatre Workshop presents We Were Friends: To Bed/Eggs\, an episodic project of Firelight’s playful reimagining of Margaret Fuller and Ralph Waldo Emerson’s profound friendship set in today’s world. A late-night phone conversation between Ralph and Margaret takes the form of a radio play in which music\, film\, voice\, and the hypnotic hum of a sleep apnea machine lead the two friends into territory both more intimate and less certain than any they’ve experienced in each other’s presence. SUMMARY:Visiting Artist Workshop with Yeonsoo Kim
DESCRIPTION:Visiting Artist Workshop with Yeonsoo Kim\n“Breathing Volume: Traditional Onggi and Buncheong Expression”\nSaturday\, August 15 (demonstration only) & Sunday\, August 16 (hands-on workshop) | 10 AM – 4 PM\nCost: Saturday only: $75 | Saturday & Sunday: $165 \nJoin us for a weekend workshop with visiting artist Yeonsoo Kim as he guides participants through the history of traditional Korean earthenware Onggi vessels\, their production and significance\, and how he incorporates these functional jars into expressive contemporary narratives. Kim will demonstrate the unique coil construction methods of Onggi pots and share the vibrant surface decoration techniques that illustrate his work. \nSaturday is a demonstration only that will focus on the “Breathing Volume” of Onggi. Following an artist talk on the history of Korean earthenware\, Kim will demonstrate the traditional “Tarae-ssaki” (coiling) and “Su-re-jil” (paddling) methods. Participants will see how rhythmic paddling creates structural integrity and dynamic volume in large-scale vessels. Saturday registration is open to all; no experience necessary. \nSunday is a hands-on workshop dedicated to the traditional Buncheong techniques of Sanggam (inlay) and Bakji (sgraffito). Participants will learn how to apply white slip over a darker clay body to create high-contrast imagery. Practicing on their own vessels and small demonstration tiles\, participants will explore how to carve out negative space (Bakji) and inlay fine lines (Sanggam) to translate personal narratives onto the clay surface. Sunday registration requires Saturday participation. Participants are encouraged to bring a leather-hard vessel to decorate; Umbrella will provide tiles for practice. Some ceramics experience recommended.

SUMMARY:Growing Up Well: Mattering in a High Pressure World
DESCRIPTION:In many high-performing communities\, young people receive powerful messages—often unintentionally—that their worth is tied to grades\, accolades\, or productivity. While ambition can be healthy\, the constant drive to achieve can also contribute to rising levels of anxiety\, burnout\, perfectionism\, and disconnection. This year’s series will introduce the concept of “mattering”—the idea that young people thrive when they feel seen\, valued\, and connected\, not just evaluated. \nOn Sept 30\, educator and author Stephanie Malia Krauss will present insights from her work on helping children and families flourish in today’s rapidly changing world. Drawing on research and real-world examples\, Krauss explores how the pace and pressures of modern life—crowded schedules\, constant connectivity\, and rising expectations—are affecting both children and the adults who support them. She highlights essential human needs such as belonging\, play\, creativity\, and purpose\, offering practical strategies for parents\, educators\, and communities to create environments where young people can truly thrive.
