SUMMARY:(The )Magic(al) (Is/of )Here: Large-Scale Paintings of Local Flowers by Maggie Stanley
DESCRIPTION:April 3-30 in the Munroe Gallery at the Concord Main Library. See library website for daily hours. \nImmerse yourself in the beauty of local flowers as we await their blooming in later spring and summer. \nMost of the paintings in this show are based on photographs taken on walks throughout Concord\, including at Great Meadows\, the Buttrick Estate\, Concord Community Gardens\, the “wisteria house” across the street from the Main Library\, and even the Keyes Road municipal parking lot. \nMany of the works were created in 2024 for Flora(l) Portals\, my solo show in the skylit atrium of the Morse Institute Library in Natick\, MA. Because the pieces were hung from balcony railings and viewed from a distance\, I used canvases ranging from 3 to 6 feet in height—hence the name of that show\, as some of the paintings are almost the size of doors. \nI’m a largely self-taught artist\, born and raised in Massachusetts\, with my childhood spent in Arlington\, Sudbury\, and then Concord\, where I now reside. Although I’ve worked in multiple mediums\, my main focus the past few years has been floral paintings on textured canvas\, which I started while in Lois Andersen’s Monday Night Painters group at The Umbrella Arts Center. I am ever-appreciative of Lois\, the camaraderie of the group\, and the variety of local trails and publicly-accessible gardens that provide such an abundance of beauty. I hope my art can convey some of that beauty to others\, no matter the season\, and encourage exploration when the conditions are right! \nwww.maggiestanley.net

SUMMARY:Ellen Garrison Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Ellen Garrison’s Birthday with The Robbins House! \nJoin us as we honor the 203rd birthday of Concord’s native daughter\, Ellen Garrison (April 14\, 1823)—an educator\, abolitionist\, and early civil rights activist whose life’s work advanced education and equality in the 19th century. \nThis special evening program will celebrate her legacy through music\, readings from Ellen’s letters\, and reflections on her enduring impact. \nMusic will be performed by the Boston Public Quartet\, a Boston-based ensemble dedicated to amplifying historically underrepresented voices in classical music. Founded in 2007\, the group is known for its innovative performances\, community engagement\, and collaborations across artistic disciplines\, bringing music to both traditional stages and diverse community spaces. \nWe’ll conclude the evening with cake in celebration of Ellen’s birthday. \nFree and open to everyone — no reservations necessary.

SUMMARY:Friends of the Library Poetry Series presents Julia Thacker and Hannah Larrabee
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Library Poetry Series presents Julia Thacker and Hannah Larrabee\, with Q & A\, book-signings\, refreshments. \nJulia Thacker reads from her debut collection\, To Wildness (Waywiser Press\, 2025) winner of the 19th Anthony Hecht Poetry Prize chosen by the internationally acclaimed poet\, Paul Muldoon. The book was also a finalist in the National Poetry Series. \nIn recipes\, spells\, odes and elegies\, To Wildness conjures what has been lost and what remains\, These are poems of the body. They rub up against one another and knock elbows. In this collection\, the dead reside alongside the living. Ancestors roost in trees\, having forgotten language\, their coats inside out. Others sulk in the eaves\, their ears clogged with clover. The past made vivid renders an extravagant present and offers a balm to the isolation of the contemporary world. \nAs Joan Houlihan says in her enthusiastic endorsement\, “Teeming with image\, sensation and sound\, the poems in To Wildness tumble us into a glorious exuberance of catalog and character\, rural landscape and dark imaginings. (‘We ate ants peeled from the bark\, a rain of plums / when he rattled the trees. Lumbering\, Shackled.”) Ancestral voices speak from the grave; fabulist figures like the girl buried with a finch tell their stories; and contemporary ghosts only the narrator sees abound (Let me touch them as they pass.)” \nThe granddaughter of a Harlan County coal miner\, Julia Thacker was raised in Dayton Ohio. She first came to Massachusetts as a fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. She has also been the recipient of fellowships from the Radcliffe Institute\, the Corporation of Yaddo and the National Endowment for the Arts. Her poems appear in Bennington Review\, Gulf Coast\, The Massachusetts Review\, The New Republic and Pleiades. A portfolio of her work is included in the 25th anniversary issue of Poetry International. Julia has taught writing at Tufts University\, Radcliffe Seminars and as poet-in-residence in public schools throughout the state. In 2024\, she was an Edith Wharton Writer-in-Residence at The Mount. She lives outside of Boston. www.juliathacker.com \nHannah Larrabee’s Wonder Tissue won the Airlie Press Poetry Prize. Her new chapbook\, The Observable Universe\, is out from Lily Press and was longlisted for a Massachusetts Book Award. Hannah’s had work in Wild Roof\, Flypaper Lit\, River Heron Review\, Gertrude Press\, Maine Review\, Molecule\, Glass: A Journal of Poetry\, and elsewhere. She wrote poetry for the NASA James Webb Space Telescope program\, and she participated in an Arctic Circle Residency with artists and scientists in October 2022. Hannah received an MFA from the University of New Hampshire where she studied with Charles Simic. She’s currently an editor at Nixes Mate Review. \nThe Observable Universe arrives like a meteor singing the poetic landscape. In this exquisite collection\, Hannah Larrabee transforms the everyday into explorations of earthly things. How memory opens the cracks in everything\, of which the poet seeks to repair. From volcanos to Smokey Bear’s dating profile\, to the songs of full-throated frogs and the brightness of the night sky\, these poems show how the “delicate assembly of love” reveals and shapes our 21st century lives. Nothing is quite as it seems. Lustrous in its language\, Larrabee illuminates the nature of human expression with every word. As she writes\, “The clouds are so low here; I want to know /when they will touch me.” —January Gill O’Neil\, Author of Glitter Road \nThis program is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Concord Free Public Library\, a patron-supported non-profit organization.\nLearn more and support the Friends’ work.

SUMMARY:Concord Band Presents Jazz Vocalist Amanda Carr and a New Composition at Spring Pops
DESCRIPTION:Jazz singer Amanda Carr\, an audience favorite\, returns for the Concord Band’s annual Spring Pops concert on Saturday\, April 11\, 7:00 PM at the 51 Walden Performing Arts Center in Concord. The program features Ms. Carr and her fresh interpretations from the Great American Songbook and New York themed songs. Another special highlight is Lilly’s Story\, the premiere of a unique composition inspired by a 12-year-old from Brockton\, named Lilly\, and her family. \nMs. Carr will perform Cheek to Cheek by Irving Berlin\, as well as Cole Porter’s Night and Day and Anything Goes. Amanda also performs vocals on Billy Joel’s New York State of Mind\, and a song that Amanda wrote called Maybe. With five jazz vocal recordings\, Ms. Carr continues to perform as a solo artist and guest host. A true collaborator\, Amanda Carr is a coach for vocal students while still writing and composing music. \nThe Concord Band collaborated with Sing Me A Story\, an organization that commissioned Boston Conservatory student composer\, Luciano Lopez-Parnetti\, to present Lilly’s Story\, a new composition that celebrates Lilly’s love of family\, food and music. In her story\, Lilly imagines a world where differences are not questioned\, but embraced. Lilly’s personal narrative is reflected in Lopez-Parnetti’s intriguing composition through a harmonically rich wall of sound\, punctuated rhythms and overlapping patterns. A remarkable photo montage\, created by Lilly herself\, will be on display at the concert. The montage explores what it feels like when others make assumptions about her mixed identity\, and the challenges of not always feeling fully seen or understood. Both Lilly’s family and composer Lopez-Parnetti will attend the premiere performance. \nContinuing with the New York theme\, the Concord Band will evoke the vibrant and frenetic energy of New York City with Warren Barker’s New York: 1927\, together with selections from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story. The Band also will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with composer Clare Grundman’s classic work\, Spirit of ’76. \nThe Concord Band’s Spring Pops concert\, conducted by Music Director James O’Dell\, will be open seating at the 51 Walden Performing Arts Center in Concord\, 7:00 PM\, Saturday\, April 11th. The audience is invited to enjoy complimentary refreshments in the lobby at intermission and after the concert. Tickets are $25 for adults\, $10 for kids 12 and under\, and can be reserved at www.ticketstage.com/concordband
