DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Concord Free Public Library present The Debut Authors Panel 2026\, moderated by Danielle Bradley\, Writer-In-Residence at CFPL. This event is part of the 2026 Concord Festival of Authors. \nDebut Author Panelists: \nLaura Garden studied conservation biology in Yungaburra\, Queensland with the School for Field Studies\, where she fell in love with Australia. Garden is passionate about sustainable agriculture\, environmental justice\, and conservation. She has won several writing competitions\, including an award from Writer’s Digest\, as well as fellowships from Wesleyan and Harvard University. She was longlisted for the Minds Shine Bright Prize in Melbourne. She runs the substack “Writing in Work Gloves.” Garden has a Masters from Harvard and lives and works on a farm in Massachusetts. She is a CCHS alum. \nMeghana Mysore’s stories\, essays\, and poems have appeared in The Yale Review\, The Massachusetts Review\, The Audacity\, and more. She is the winner of the Barry Hannah Prize in Fiction. Mysore has been a Steinbeck Fellow and a scholar at McCormack Writing Center and Bread Loaf. She holds an MFA from Hollins University and a BA in English from Yale. Mysore has taught as visiting faculty at Amherst College and Bucknell University\, and is now an assistant professor of English at Randolph College. From Portland\, Oregon\, Meghana is a daughter of Indian immigrants and a lover of non-sequiturs and used bookstores. \nAbigail Savitch-Lew is a writer of fiction and nonfiction and an American of Jewish and Chinese (Ashkenazi and Toisanese) descent. She has a BA in literary arts from Brown University and an MFA in fiction from Rutgers University-Newark. She is the author of the novel Livonia Chow Mein\, and her short stories have been published in The Round\, Post Road\, The Best Teen Writing of 2010\, and The Apprentice Writer. Previously\, she was a staff reporter for City Limits\, an Asian American Writers’ Workshop Margins Fellow\, and an adjunct professor of creative writing at Rutgers. \nModerator: \nDanielle Bradley’s debut novel\, Crying in Baseball\, is forthcoming from Simon & Schuster’s Avid Reader Press in 2027. Her work has been supported by a grant from the Mass Cultural Council for creative individuals\, the McCormack Writing Center\, where she served as a 2025/2026 Reading Fellow\, and Meridians: feminism\, race\, transnationalism\, where she was selected as the winner of the 2025 Elizabeth Alexander Creative Writing Award. Danielle’s work appears in The Rumpus\, Indiana Review\, Colorado Review\, Salt Hill Journal\, the Brooklyn Rail\, and elsewhere. She holds a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and an MFA from the MFA for Poets and Writers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. DESCRIPTION:The orchestra\, conducted by Music Director Zeke Fetrow\, performs music by Anna Clyne\, Garbriel Fauré\, and Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky A pre-concert talk is scheduled for 7:15pm. \nClyne’s short composition\, Masquerade (2013)\, was inspired by pleasure gardens in London in the 18th century\, where people gathered in the summer to experience masquerade balls\, fireworks\, and performances of music\, dance\, acrobatics\, and theater.\nThe four movements of Fauré’s Pelléas et Mélisande Suite were selected from incidental music he composed for a play. The Sicilienne movement is one of Fauré’s most easily recognized and best-loved works. \nTchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 3 “Polish” gets its nickname from the polonaise rhythm in its finale. We are waiving the entry fee again this year and hope you will consider a donation. \n\n\nThe Mighty Moose Fun Run/Walk is held in memory of Jenna Swaim\, a loving mother\, and wife who lost her courageous four-year battle with ovarian cancer on July 3\, 2018. She was 43 years old. The name of the event is inspired by Jenna’s Alaskan roots\, love for fun\, and strength! The event is part of the Kicks for Cancer weekend\, a very successful fundraiser that the Concord Carlisle High School soccer team and coaches Ray Pavlik & Steve Wells started in 2007. \nWe will continue Jenna‘s legacy and vision to raise crucial funding for this cause. DESCRIPTION:Join Steve Edwards\, the 2025 Concord Free Public Library Writer-In-Residence\, for a discussion of his new book Rare Good: Essays on Art Autism\, and Astonishment. \nSteve Edwards was diagnosed with autism in his mid-thirties\, altering his relationship to writing and family. He discovered what he had always known but never said: His compulsion to create was more than just a pursuit of self-expression. Faced with a mix of belief and disbelief from those who knew him\, and full of questions himself\, he committed to a new sense of wonder and pursuit of revelation. \n​Rare Good offers insights into Edwards’s experience of the awe that only art\, disability\, and loved ones can bring. Raising a disabled child and delving into acknowledging his own mindedness\, he explores the struggles of communicating and finding care\, the joy of gathering as community\, and the astonishing gifts that art and education offer us\, especially when we acknowledge the contributions of disabled artists past and present. Drawing on times of heartbreak transformed into determination\, Edwards describes his ongoing desire to find a way together. A singular work of lyric nonfiction\, Rare Good is a reminder and balm for all who might feel different. \nBio: Steve Edwards is the author of the memoir Breaking into the Backcountry\, the story of his seven months as caretaker of a remote homestead along the federally designated “Wild and Scenic Rogue River” in Oregon during the Margery Davis Boyden Wilderness Writing Residency. His second book Rare Good: Essays on Art\, Autism\, and Astonishment is forthcoming in October 2026. Steve’s essays have most recently appeared in The Yale Review\, The Sun\, Orion Magazine\, Literary Hub\, and Longreads. His essay “Yellow Band” was one of the most-read prose works in The Yale Review in 2024. He is the recipient of a Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship in Fiction/Nonfiction. He was the 2025 writer-in-residence at the historic Concord Free Public Library. Steve lives in Metrowest Boston with his wife and son. \n​Though the number astonishes him\, Steve has been teaching college writing for twenty-five years\, with stops along the way at Purdue University\, Emerson College\, Simmons College\, and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln\, and\, for more than a decade\, he has been a professor of English Studies at Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts. A highlight of his teaching career has been leading the original course Neurodiversity in Literature and Life at Tufts University’s Experimental College. He discovered what he had always known but never said: His compulsion to create was more than just a pursuit of self-expression. Faced with a mix of belief and disbelief from those who knew him\, and full of questions himself\, he committed to a new sense of wonder and pursuit of revelation. \n​Rare Good offers insights into Edwards’s experience of the awe that only art\, disability\, and loved ones can bring. Raising a disabled child and delving into acknowledging his own mindedness\, he explores the struggles of communicating and finding care\, the joy of gathering as community\, and the astonishing gifts that art and education offer us\, especially when we acknowledge the contributions of disabled artists past and present. Drawing on times of heartbreak transformed into determination\, Edwards describes his ongoing desire to find a way together. A singular work of lyric nonfiction\, Rare Good is a reminder and balm for all who might feel different. \nBio: Steve Edwards is the author of the memoir Breaking into the Backcountry\, the story of his seven months as caretaker of a remote homestead along the federally designated “Wild and Scenic Rogue River” in Oregon during the Margery Davis Boyden Wilderness Writing Residency. His second book Rare Good: Essays on Art\, Autism\, and Astonishment is forthcoming in October 2026. Steve’s essays have most recently appeared in The Yale Review\, The Sun\, Orion Magazine\, Literary Hub\, and Longreads. His essay “Yellow Band” was one of the most-read prose works in The Yale Review in 2024. He is the recipient of a Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship in Fiction/Nonfiction. He was the 2025 writer-in-residence at the historic Concord Free Public Library. Steve lives in Metrowest Boston with his wife and son. \n​Though the number astonishes him\, Steve has been teaching college writing for twenty-five years\, with stops along the way at Purdue University\, Emerson College\, Simmons College\, and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln\, and\, for more than a decade\, he has been a professor of English Studies at Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts. DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Walden Woods Project\, as part of The Concord Festival of Authors\, for a presentation from Matt Patterson! \nAbout Matt Patterson: \nThere’s almost no distance Matt Patterson won’t go\, almost nothing he won’t do\, to learn all he can about the subjects he paints to make them as accurate and lifelike as possible. He’s pulled giant snapping turtles out of Boston’s muddy river\, worked with the Turtle Survival Alliance experts to survey radiated tortoises in Madagascar’s Spiny Forest and trapped and tagged turtles in the rainforest of Belize. He has illustrated several books including his first book\, “Freshwater Fish of the Northeast”\, written by his father. He also illustrated “The Book of Turtles”\, which won seven national awards including a Sibert Honor\, the NY Times bestselling “Of Time and Turtles”\, and the recently released picture book “The True and Lucky Life of a Turtle”. The latter three books were written by Sy Montgomery. Matt is a member of Artists For Conservation\, Society of Animal Artists and a Fellow in The Explorer’s Club. His work has been featured in American Art Collector Magazine\, Yankee Magazine\, Fine Art Connoisseur and has won numerous awards including twice winning the Roger Tory Peterson Wild American Art award and the AFC Medal of Excellence. \nAbout the presentation: \nAt a young age\, Matt was fascinated with nature and art\, and he has traveled all over to research his subjects. An important part of his illustration process is seeing and learning about his subjects in the wild. DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Concord Free Public Library present the 2026 Breakfast with the Authors panel\, which will take place at Concord’s Colonial Inn\, 48 Monument Square. The event will be moderated by local author and physician\, Dr. Suzanne Koven. \nCFA Breakfast tickets can be purchased at the Barrow Bookstore as well as online on the CFA website. This event includes a full buffet breakfast at Concord’s Colonial Inn. \n* Please note that the room is not handicap accessible. Please contact the Colonial inn for assistance. \nCastellani and bookChristopher Castellani is the author of five books\, most recently the novel Leading Men\, for which he received Fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation\, MacDowell\, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Leading Men was published by Viking Penguin\, and is currently being adapted for film by Peter Spears (Oscar-winning producer of Nomadland) and Searchlight Pictures. The Art of Perspective: Who Tells the Story\, a collection of essays on point of view in fiction\, was published in 2016 by Graywolf Press.. His first novel\, A Kiss from Maddalena (Algonquin\, 2003) won the Massachusetts Book Award; its follow-up\, The Saint of Lost Things (Algonquin\, 2005)\, was a BookSense (IndieBound) Notable Book; the final novel in the trilogy\, All This Talk of Love (Algonquin\, 2013)\, was a New York Times Editors’ Choice and a finalist for the Ferro-Grumley Literary Award. Christopher is currently the Writer-in-Residence at Brandeis University\, on the faculty and academic board of the Warren Wilson MFA program\, and the faculty of the Bread Loaf Writers Conference. Last Seen was published on February 17th\, 2026 by Viking Penguin. \nGish JenGish Jen’s work has been included in The Best American Short Stories five times\, including in The Best American Short Stories of the Century. A fellow of both the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, she has received NEA\, Guggenheim\, and Radcliffe fellowships\, a Lannan Literary Award\, and a five-year Mildred and Harold Strauss Living Award. Her short work has appeared in The New Yorker\, The Atlantic Monthly\, The New York Times\, and many anthologies; she has taught at Harvard University\, NYU Shanghai\, and other universities. Bad Bad Girl is her sixth novel; her other books include two collections of short stories and two works of non-fiction\, including publication of her Massey Lectures in the History of American Civilization at Harvard University. \nHester Kaplan is the author of two story collections\, The Edge of Marriage (University of Georgia Press\, and Norton)\, which received The Flannery O’Connor Prize for Short Fiction; and Unravished (Ig Publishing); the novels The Tell (HarperCollins) and Kinship Theory (Little\, Brown). Her stories and essays have appeared in Agni Review\, Ploughshares\, Story\, Glimmer Train\, Southwest Review\, and Indiana Review\, among other journals and publications. Her work has been widely anthologized\, including in The Best American Short Stories\, Creature Needs\, Providence Noir\, Beautiful Flesh\, and others. Recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships\, two fellowships in literature from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts\, she was named Mark Twain Fellow for her new book\, Twice Born (Catapult\, 2025). Her work has received the McGinnis Ritchie Award for Non-fiction\, The Salamander Award for Fiction\, among other awards and recognitions. \nSuzanne Koven\, longtime host of the CFA Breakfast with the Authors\, received her B.A. in English literature from Yale and her M.D. from Johns Hopkins. She also holds an M.F.A. in nonfiction from the Bennington Writing Seminars. In 2019 she was named inaugural Writer in Residence at Mass General. Her essays\, articles\, blogs\, and reviews have appeared in The Boston Globe\, The New England Journal of Medicine\, The Lancet\, The New Yorker.com\, Psychology Today\, The L.A. Review of Books\, The Virginia Quarterly\, STAT\, and other publications. Her monthly column “In Practice” appeared in the Boston Globe and won the Will Solimene Award for Excellence in Medical Writing from the American Medical Writers Association in 2012. Her interview column\, “The Big Idea\,” appears at The Rumpus. Suzanne conducts workshops\, moderates panel discussions\, and speaks to a variety of audiences about literature and medicine\, narrative and storytelling in medicine\, women’s health\, mental healthcare\, and primary care and co-directs the Media and Medicine Certificate Program at Harvard Medical School. Suzanne’s essay collection\, Letter to a Young Female Physician\, was published by W.W. Norton & Co. in 2021. Her memoir\, The Mirror Box: A Doctor’s Story will be published by W.W. Norton & Co. on March 23\, 2027. Koven was born and raised in New York City. SUMMARY:Concord Festival of Authors: Poetry Panel with Nate Klug and Catherine Stearns
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of the Concord Free Public Library for an in-person afternoon with poets Nate Klug and Catherine Stearns who will read and engage in a Q & A about their inspirations and craft. \nNate Klug reads from his collection\, Hosts and Guests: poems. Klug is a poet and the author of Rude Woods\, a modern translation of Virgil’s Eclogues (The Song Cave\, 2013)\, Anyone (Chicago\, 2015)\, and Hosts and Guests (Princeton\, 2020). His poems have appeared in The Nation\, The New York Review of Books\, Best American Poetry\, and elsewhere. His writing has been supported by fellowships from the James Merrill House\, MacDowell\, and the Poetry Foundation. A Congregationalist minister\, he works at the First Parish in Lincoln and lives in Concord\, Massachusetts. \nCatherine Stearns holds an MFA in Poetry from the Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa\, and a Ph.D. in American Literature from Brandeis University. Her first book\, The Transparency of Skin (New Rivers Press)\, was selected as a finalist for the Minnesota Book Awards\, and a later chapbook\, Then & Again\, was published by the regional book-arts press\, Slate Roof. Her most recent collection\, Out Toward Morning\, was released this fall by Grid Press. She taught writing and literature for many years at Belmont Hill School\, where she headed the English Department\, and was Writer-in Residence at the Roxbury Latin School before she retired.
