DESCRIPTION:Artisans Way in Concord center welcomes artists Victoria and Lawrence Elbroch on Saturday\, October 18 from 12-5pm. Their show\, “Under the Branches\,” includes both Victoria’s printmaking and drawing\, and Lawrence’s photography. They attribute their collaborative work to their loving relationship and a shared inspiration. Reveling in their different ways of seeing ancient trees\, Victoria works in a sketchbook plein air and Lawrence takes photographs from the same angle. The two forms of a single image are then expertly blended to arrive at one unique\, composite view of their individual interpretations. These are the pieces that are especially featured in the “Under the Branches” collection debuting at Artisans Way.\nThey will be in the gallery to talk about their work and answer questions. He discovered what he had always known but never said: His compulsion to create was more than just a pursuit of self-expression. Faced with a mix of belief and disbelief from those who knew him\, and full of questions himself\, he committed to a new sense of wonder and pursuit of revelation. \n​Rare Good offers insights into Edwards’s experience of the awe that only art\, disability\, and loved ones can bring. Raising a disabled child and delving into acknowledging his own mindedness\, he explores the struggles of communicating and finding care\, the joy of gathering as community\, and the astonishing gifts that art and education offer us\, especially when we acknowledge the contributions of disabled artists past and present. Drawing on times of heartbreak transformed into determination\, Edwards describes his ongoing desire to find a way together. A singular work of lyric nonfiction\, Rare Good is a reminder and balm for all who might feel different. \nBio: Steve Edwards is the author of the memoir Breaking into the Backcountry\, the story of his seven months as caretaker of a remote homestead along the federally designated “Wild and Scenic Rogue River” in Oregon during the Margery Davis Boyden Wilderness Writing Residency. His second book Rare Good: Essays on Art\, Autism\, and Astonishment is forthcoming in October 2026. Steve’s essays have most recently appeared in The Yale Review\, The Sun\, Orion Magazine\, Literary Hub\, and Longreads. His essay “Yellow Band” was one of the most-read prose works in The Yale Review in 2024. He is the recipient of a Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship in Fiction/Nonfiction. He was the 2025 writer-in-residence at the historic Concord Free Public Library. SUMMARY:Wildlife in Focus: Matt Patterson’s Journey in Art and Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Walden Woods Project\, as part of The Concord Festival of Authors\, for a presentation from Matt Patterson! \nAbout Matt Patterson: \nThere’s almost no distance Matt Patterson won’t go\, almost nothing he won’t do\, to learn all he can about the subjects he paints to make them as accurate and lifelike as possible. He’s pulled giant snapping turtles out of Boston’s muddy river\, worked with the Turtle Survival Alliance experts to survey radiated tortoises in Madagascar’s Spiny Forest and trapped and tagged turtles in the rainforest of Belize. He has illustrated several books including his first book\, “Freshwater Fish of the Northeast”\, written by his father. He also illustrated “The Book of Turtles”\, which won seven national awards including a Sibert Honor\, the NY Times bestselling “Of Time and Turtles”\, and the recently released picture book “The True and Lucky Life of a Turtle”. The latter three books were written by Sy Montgomery. Matt is a member of Artists For Conservation\, Society of Animal Artists and a Fellow in The Explorer’s Club. His work has been featured in American Art Collector Magazine\, Yankee Magazine\, Fine Art Connoisseur and has won numerous awards including twice winning the Roger Tory Peterson Wild American Art award and the AFC Medal of Excellence. \nAbout the presentation: \nAt a young age\, Matt was fascinated with nature and art\, and he has traveled all over to research his subjects. An important part of his illustration process is seeing and learning about his subjects in the wild. In his presentation\, he will discuss his experiences working in the field\, conservation\, his art\, and researching the three most recent books he worked on with the award-winning author Sy Montgomery. \nWhen: Wednesday\, October 21\, 6:15-8:00 pm EST. \nWhere: The Walden Woods Project (address provided upon registration) \nDoors will open at 6:15 pm for a wine and cheese reception.
