SUMMARY:Woman of Mystery: The Life and Work of Elizabeth Garver Jordan
DESCRIPTION:Beginning her career as a reporter who became known for her coverage of the 1893 Lizzie Borden murder trial\, Elizabeth Garver Jordan was a late nineteenth-century “influencer.” She used her platforms as a prominent editor\, suffrage activist\, and popular mystery author to shape cultural conversations about women’s lives. Like so many overlooked women of the past\, she deserves rediscovery for the way her life and work cast new light on the revolutions of her era. \nFortuitously\, Jordan is the subject of two recent books\, each exploring different parts of the puzzle she represents. This panel of brief presentations and robust discussion will illuminate Jordan’s fascinating life. The panelists will discuss her pioneering work as a woman journalist\, the story of how she leveraged her professional reputation to campaign for the woman’s vote\, and her prolific career as the author of gripping mystery novels. They will also address Jordan’s personal history\, focusing on how she\, as an unmarried woman living in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries\, forged an unconventional\, boundary-breaking life\, which included a passionate friendship with The Secret Garden author Frances Hodgson Burnett and a rumored marriage proposal from novelist Henry James. Jordan also created a lifelong chosen family by making a home with two other unmarried professional women. Among other adventures\, these three intrepid partners adopted and jointly raised a child — whose own daughter\, Betsy Devine\, now lives in Concord. Betsy will join literary scholars Jane Carr and Lori Harrison-Kahan to explore how the different puzzle pieces of Jordan’s life fit together. \nSpeakers: \nJane Carr and Lori Harrison-Kahan\, co-editors of a Penguin Classics edition of Jordan’s journalism and fiction titled The Case of Lizzie Borden and Other Writings (2024) \nConcordian and Jordan’s namesake\, Betsy Devine (née Elizabeth Jordan Devine)\, who will talk about her personal connection to Jordan’s “family of choice.” \nPresenter Bios \nJane Carr teaches in the Arts\, Communication\, and Media program at Fairleigh Dickinson University. With Lori Harrison-Kahan\, she is the co-editor of The Case of Lizzie Borden and Other Writings\, and her journalism and scholarly writing have appeared in publications including CNN.com\, The Atlantic\, Slate\, Vox\, and American Quarterly. She is a former Senior Editor for Ideas at CNN Opinion and recipient of the New York Press Club Award for Online Commentary. She was an American Council of Learned Societies/Mellon Public Fellow at the think tank New America and has taught literature\, creative writing\, and the humanities at New York University and Manhattanville University. \nBetsy Devine (née Elizabeth Jordan Devine) grew up spending summers at Spreadwings in Western Massachusetts\, the country house of her namesake\, Elizabeth Jordan\, whose bedroom and study were lovingly kept exactly as she had left them. One of the first female grad students at Princeton\, where she studied engineering\, Betsy is the author of two light-heartedly-science books. She is also a singer-songwriter whose poem “If we can keep it here” was one of three ‘highly commended’ by the Concord250 Poetry Project. Betsy is delighted by this chance to share family legends and gossip\, with photos besides. \nLori Harrison-Kahan teaches in the English Department at Boston College and has received multiple awards for recovering forgotten literary works by women. In addition to co-editing The Case of Lizzie Borden and Other Writings with Jane Carr\, she is the editor of The Superwoman and Other Writings by Miriam Michelson\, co-editor of Heirs of Yesterday by Emma Wolf\, and co-editor of Matrilineal Dissent: Women Writers and Jewish American Literary History. She is the author of West of the Ghetto: Jewish Women\, Old San Francisco\, and American Literary Culture and The White Negress: Literature\, Minstrelsy\, and the Black-Jewish Imaginary.

Formed in 2021 after a fortuitous basement jam session\, the band fuses its members’ eclectic music backgrounds into something both sharply peculiar and deeply accessible. FORAGER has built their following on the strength of their live show\, selling out venues across the U.S. and opening for artists like Raveena\, Salami Rose Joe Louis\, and Red Baraat. He attended the Berklee College of Music for two semesters\, focusing on jazz piano\, music production\, and engineering. In September 2015\, while studying for the LSAT\, he was invited to the renowned Abbey Road Studios in London for recording sessions with Grammy Award-winning “Uptown Funk” producer Mark Ronson after being selected for a competition produced by Converse. DAP released his new single Fuji Shuffle (To The Left) on October 23\, 2026. \nFounded in 2022 by Roger Brown\, the nonprofit Salt Lick Incubator is reshaping the landscape for artists by providing support\, grants\, essential career guidance\, and exposure to new audiences through such vehicles as WERS Radio’s Salt Lick Sessions and the Salt Lick YouTube channel. Led by an illustrious artist advisory board including T Bone Burnett\, Jon Batiste\, Patrice Rushen\, and more\, its unwavering commitment to fostering diverse\, emerging musicians is a testament to its belief in the transformative power of music.

SUMMARY:The Concord Orchestra presents "Restless"
DESCRIPTION:The orchestra\, conducted by Music Director Zeke Fetrow\, performs Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story Overture\, Carl Nielsen’s Concerto for Flute\, and César Franck’s Symphony in D Minor. Susan Jackson\, principal flute of the Concord Orchestra\, is the soloist for the Nielsen Flute Concerto. A pre-concert talk is scheduled for 7:15pm. \nBernstein’s longtime associate and orchestrator Maurice Peress arranged the West Side Story Overture for full symphony orchestra\, capturing many the musical’s vibrant themes in a high-energy medley. \nDanish composer Carl Nielsen wrote the Flute Concerto in 1926. The concerto sometimes sounds like chamber music as the flute soloist has musical conversations with other instruments of the orchestra who play short solos\, including a rude bass trombone who keeps interrupting the flute. \nFlute soloist Susan Jackson has been the principal flute of Concord Orchestra since 1995. She is a graduate of Tufts University and New England Conservatory where she studied with Claude Monteux and Fenwick Smith. She also performs with the New Hampshire Philharmonic and Carlisle Chamber Orchestra. She is a faculty member at UMass Lowell and the Instrumental Music School of Carlisle and Concord. \nFrench composer César Franck’s dramatic Symphony in D minor\, written in 1888\, is his best-known symphonic work. Franck was a virtuoso organist\, and the first movement goes through a series of modulations that have been compared to a masterful organ improvisation. The second movement is known for a haunting melody played by solo English horn. The haunting melody returns in the final movement\, and principal themes from earlier movements come together\, blending beautifully. \nTickets for adults and seniors are $25. Admission for youth under 18 is free. For tickets and information\, call 978-369-4967 or visit concordorchestra.com.
