SUMMARY:Pet Loss Workshop for Families
DESCRIPTION:This hands-on workshop for children in grades K-6 will be led by Graduate Interns and an LICSW at our nature center. \nFor many children\, a pet is a best friend\, a family member\, and a source of comfort. When that companion dies\, the grief can feel big\, confusing\, and sometimes overwhelming. \nBecause pet loss isn’t always talked about openly\, children can feel alone in their sadness. This group offers a caring\, supportive space to honor beloved pets\, share stories\, and make sense of big feelings together. \nThis workshop will be led by graduate interns and a licensed mental health counselor at our nature center. In addition to guided conversation\, we will make a memorial for our pets and families will have individual time with our therapy animals. Families will leave with tools for coping\, remembering\, and staying connected to the love they shared with their pet. \nPlease know that we understand grief is heavy enough\, and finances shouldn’t add to it. If the cost is a barrier at the moment\, please email me\, at swirtanen@nature-connection.org and we’ll find an option that works. \nPlease note we share our space with animals\, so you may notice the natural scents and sounds of small animals. If you’re sensitive to smells or have allergies\, please keep this in mind.

SUMMARY:The Concord Orchestra presents "Vignettes"
DESCRIPTION:The orchestra\, conducted by Music Director Zeke Fetrow\, performs a program of Gustav Holst’s A Somerset Rhapsody\, Dmitri Shostakovich’s Suite for Variety Orchestra\, Georg Philipp Telemann’s Trumpet Concerto in D Major\, and Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. \nWilliam Kasel\, principal trumpet of the Concord Orchestra\, is the soloist for Telemann’s Trumpet Concerto in D major. Born and raised in Lancaster\, Pennsylvania\, William began playing the trumpet at the age of nine. As an undergraduate student at Boston University\, William studied with Rolf Smedvig\, former principal trumpet of the Boston Symphony and one of the founding members of the Empire Brass Quintet\, and Roger Voisin\, former principal trumpet of the Boston Symphony. William spent three summers as a student at Tanglewood performing with the Boston University Institute and the Fellows at the Berkshire Music Festival. William has played with Sarah Caldwell’s Opera Company in Boston and the Empire Brass Quintet. After a 25-year interlude\, William returned to performing in 2013\, sharing with the public his passion for music and the trumpet. \nHolst’s A Somerset Rhapsody is based on English folk tunes\, inspired by the idyllic beauty of the Somerset region of England. \nThe orchestra performs several movements from Shostakovich’s Suite for Variety Orchestra\, based on his film scores\, ballet and theater music. The unusual instrumentation includes accordion and saxophone. \nMussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is a musical visit to an art gallery. It was written as a tribute to Viktor Hartmann\, an artist and close friend of the composer who died prematurely. It was originally composed for piano and expertly orchestrated by Maurice Ravel. \nTickets for adults and seniors are $25. Admission for youth under 18 is free. For tickets and information\, call 978-369-4967 or visit https://www.concordorchestra.com/vignettes.

SUMMARY:(The )Magic(al) (Is/of )Here: Large-Scale Paintings of Local Flowers by Maggie Stanley
DESCRIPTION:April 3-30 in the Munroe Gallery at the Concord Main Library. See library website for daily hours. \nImmerse yourself in the beauty of local flowers as we await their blooming in later spring and summer. \nMost of the paintings in this show are based on photographs taken on walks throughout Concord\, including at Great Meadows\, the Buttrick Estate\, Concord Community Gardens\, the “wisteria house” across the street from the Main Library\, and even the Keyes Road municipal parking lot. \nMany of the works were created in 2024 for Flora(l) Portals\, my solo show in the skylit atrium of the Morse Institute Library in Natick\, MA. Because the pieces were hung from balcony railings and viewed from a distance\, I used canvases ranging from 3 to 6 feet in height—hence the name of that show\, as some of the paintings are almost the size of doors. \nI’m a largely self-taught artist\, born and raised in Massachusetts\, with my childhood spent in Arlington\, Sudbury\, and then Concord\, where I now reside. Although I’ve worked in multiple mediums\, my main focus the past few years has been floral paintings on textured canvas\, which I started while in Lois Andersen’s Monday Night Painters group at The Umbrella Arts Center. I am ever-appreciative of Lois\, the camaraderie of the group\, and the variety of local trails and publicly-accessible gardens that provide such an abundance of beauty. I hope my art can convey some of that beauty to others\, no matter the season\, and encourage exploration when the conditions are right! \nwww.maggiestanley.net

SUMMARY:Sustainable Landscaping at Mount Auburn Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Dave Barnett recently retired from Mount Auburn Cemetery\, where he spent 28 years leading the transition to more ecologically friendly landscape design and maintenance practices. Dave will share examples of how the staff at Mount Auburn converted many areas of labor-intensive and carbon-intensive lawns to various lower-maintenance meadow and groundcover plantings. Most of these changes were small-scale projects\, ranging from a butterfly/pollinator garden to plantings of groundcovers\, perennials and shrubs that both reduced mowing needs and greatly enhanced the ecological value to pollinators\, birds and other wildlife. \nDave started at Mount Auburn Cemetery in 1993 as Director of Horticulture\, was promoted to Vice President of Operations & Horticulture in 1999\, and then became President & CEO in 2008. After 28 years at Mount Auburn\, he retired in September 2021. Prior to Mount Auburn\, Dave held various other positions in the field of public horticulture. His educational background includes a B.S. in Environmental Horticulture from the University of Connecticut\, and an M.S. in Environmental Horticulture and a Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of California\, Davis. Honors Dave has received include the American Public Gardens Association’s Honorary Life Member Award\, the Garden Club of America’s Distinguished Service Medal\, and the Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s Gold Medal. \nThe Concord Free Public Library is committed to providing everyone with unimpeded access to our resources\, programs\, and services. Learn more about accessibility at our libraries. You can also email our administration team or give us a call at either of our libraries to request additional accommodations. \nThe Concord Free Public Library’s programs are free to the public thanks to the generous support of the Friends of the Concord Free Public Library and the Concord Free Public Library Corporation.

SUMMARY:Concord Band Presents Jazz Vocalist Amanda Carr and a New Composition at Spring Pops
DESCRIPTION:Jazz singer Amanda Carr\, an audience favorite\, returns for the Concord Band’s annual Spring Pops concert on Saturday\, April 11\, 7:00 PM at the 51 Walden Performing Arts Center in Concord. The program features Ms. Carr and her fresh interpretations from the Great American Songbook and New York themed songs. Another special highlight is Lilly’s Story\, the premiere of a unique composition inspired by a 12-year-old from Brockton\, named Lilly\, and her family. \nMs. Carr will perform Cheek to Cheek by Irving Berlin\, as well as Cole Porter’s Night and Day and Anything Goes. Amanda also performs vocals on Billy Joel’s New York State of Mind\, and a song that Amanda wrote called Maybe. With five jazz vocal recordings\, Ms. Carr continues to perform as a solo artist and guest host. A true collaborator\, Amanda Carr is a coach for vocal students while still writing and composing music. \nThe Concord Band collaborated with Sing Me A Story\, an organization that commissioned Boston Conservatory student composer\, Luciano Lopez-Parnetti\, to present Lilly’s Story\, a new composition that celebrates Lilly’s love of family\, food and music. In her story\, Lilly imagines a world where differences are not questioned\, but embraced. Lilly’s personal narrative is reflected in Lopez-Parnetti’s intriguing composition through a harmonically rich wall of sound\, punctuated rhythms and overlapping patterns. A remarkable photo montage\, created by Lilly herself\, will be on display at the concert. The montage explores what it feels like when others make assumptions about her mixed identity\, and the challenges of not always feeling fully seen or understood. Both Lilly’s family and composer Lopez-Parnetti will attend the premiere performance. \nContinuing with the New York theme\, the Concord Band will evoke the vibrant and frenetic energy of New York City with Warren Barker’s New York: 1927\, together with selections from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story. The Band also will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with composer Clare Grundman’s classic work\, Spirit of ’76. \nThe Concord Band’s Spring Pops concert\, conducted by Music Director James O’Dell\, will be open seating at the 51 Walden Performing Arts Center in Concord\, 7:00 PM\, Saturday\, April 11th. The audience is invited to enjoy complimentary refreshments in the lobby at intermission and after the concert. Tickets are $25 for adults\, $10 for kids 12 and under\, and can be reserved at www.ticketstage.com/concordband

SUMMARY:Artist reception: (The )Magic(al) (Is/of )Here: Large-Scale Paintings of Local Flowers by Maggie Stanley
DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy the colorful floral art\, company\, and light refreshments in the Munroe Gallery. \nShow is up April 3-30\, see library website for daily hours.
