Liminal Spaces Where Art and Nature Intersect” featuring work by Linda Booth Sweeney\, Linda Ziemba & Jamie Collins. \nOpening Reception: June 10\, 3 – 5 PM (RSVP appreciated) | Exhibition Dates: May 29 – June 28\, 2026 \nJoin us for light refreshments starting at 3 PM and an Artists’ Talk at 3:30 PM. Families and children welcome. This event is free and open to all. \nWhat’s Going On Here? is a three-part\, immersive installation that transforms The Umbrella Arts Center into a living\, breathing work of art—one that draws its energy from liminal spaces: vernal pools\, backyard edges\, cracks in city sidewalks… places where something unexpected is always about to happen. \nThrough habitable sculpture\, photography\, sound\, and story\, the lawn and the Wedge Gallery become a sequence of spatial\, visual and sensory encounters that invite visitors to enter\, pass through\, and dwell\, not just observe. \nLinda Ziemba composes space through Habitable Sculpture such as L’ Arc\, creating environments where ideas spark\, stories surface\, connections form\, and conversations carry beyond the moment. \nLinda Booth Sweeney\, a systems designer and writer\, brings the narrative spine of The Noisy Puddle\, a children’s story rooted in wonder\, interdependence\, and the surprising richness of small worlds. \nJamie Collins\, a graphic designer and photographer\, captures vivid portraits of macro life and uses photography in his exhibit Patio Life as a way to ponder the natural world\, asking questions such as: “Why is the wasp eating the wood chair?” \nLearn more and RSVP at TheUmbrellaArts.org/whats-going-here \nJune 1-28

DESCRIPTION:SUMMER CERAMICS: Wheel Fundamentals\nMondays\, July 6 – August 10\, 6 – 9 PM (6 weeks)\nAge range: Adult\nCost: $405\nInstructor: Kyle Johns \nThis course is designed for those who would like to gain a basic understanding of the fundamentals of wheel throwing as well as for those with experience who want to build new skills and strengthen their throwing technique. This class will cover many technical and aesthetic concerns of working with clay. Demonstrations and projects will be made accessible for new students and scalable for those with more experience. Beginners will be introduced to clay by learning the fundamentals of working on a potter’s wheel and the basics of hand-building techniques. For students with experience in the basics of wheel throwing\, more specific projects and challenges will be offered as will the option to develop projects independently. This class is suitable for all skill levels. \nAbout the instructor: Widely exhibited and published artist and teacher\, Kyle Johns was a Ceramics Artist-in-Residence at The Umbrella Arts Center and currently is the Ceramics Studio Technician. With an MFA from Ohio University\, Kyle has been a resident at Red Lodge Clay Center\, The Interdisciplinary Ceramics Research Center\, The Archie Bray Foundation\, and The International Ceramics Center in Kecskemet\, Hungary. He has taught at Kansas State University\, Massachusetts College of Art and Design\, and the Ceramics Program at Harvard University.

DESCRIPTION:Visiting Artist Workshop with Yeonsoo Kim\n“Breathing Volume: Traditional Onggi and Buncheong Expression”\nSaturday\, August 15 (demonstration only) & Sunday\, August 16 (hands-on workshop) | 10 AM – 4 PM\nCost: Saturday only: $75 | Saturday & Sunday: $165 \nJoin us for a weekend workshop with visiting artist Yeonsoo Kim as he guides participants through the history of traditional Korean earthenware Onggi vessels\, their production and significance\, and how he incorporates these functional jars into expressive contemporary narratives. Kim will demonstrate the unique coil construction methods of Onggi pots and share the vibrant surface decoration techniques that illustrate his work. \nSaturday is a demonstration only that will focus on the “Breathing Volume” of Onggi. Following an artist talk on the history of Korean earthenware\, Kim will demonstrate the traditional “Tarae-ssaki” (coiling) and “Su-re-jil” (paddling) methods. Participants will see how rhythmic paddling creates structural integrity and dynamic volume in large-scale vessels. Saturday registration is open to all; no experience necessary. \nSunday is a hands-on workshop dedicated to the traditional Buncheong techniques of Sanggam (inlay) and Bakji (sgraffito). Participants will learn how to apply white slip over a darker clay body to create high-contrast imagery. Practicing on their own vessels and small demonstration tiles\, participants will explore how to carve out negative space (Bakji) and inlay fine lines (Sanggam) to translate personal narratives onto the clay surface. Sunday registration requires Saturday participation. Participants are encouraged to bring a leather-hard vessel to decorate; Umbrella will provide tiles for practice. Some ceramics experience recommended.
