The event will include brief remarks on the celebration of Spring and Nowruz in diverse cultures\, poetry recitations\, music by the MIT Middle Eastern Ensemble\, and light refreshments. \nThis program is funded in part by a grant from the Concord Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.

DESCRIPTION:April 3-30 in the Munroe Gallery at the Concord Main Library. See library website for daily hours. \nImmerse yourself in the beauty of local flowers as we await their blooming in later spring and summer. \nMost of the paintings in this show are based on photographs taken on walks throughout Concord\, including at Great Meadows\, the Buttrick Estate\, Concord Community Gardens\, the “wisteria house” across the street from the Main Library\, and even the Keyes Road municipal parking lot. \nMany of the works were created in 2024 for Flora(l) Portals\, my solo show in the skylit atrium of the Morse Institute Library in Natick\, MA. Because the pieces were hung from balcony railings and viewed from a distance\, I used canvases ranging from 3 to 6 feet in height—hence the name of that show\, as some of the paintings are almost the size of doors. \nI’m a largely self-taught artist\, born and raised in Massachusetts\, with my childhood spent in Arlington\, Sudbury\, and then Concord\, where I now reside. Although I’ve worked in multiple mediums\, my main focus the past few years has been floral paintings on textured canvas\, which I started while in Lois Andersen’s Monday Night Painters group at The Umbrella Arts Center. I am ever-appreciative of Lois\, the camaraderie of the group\, and the variety of local trails and publicly-accessible gardens that provide such an abundance of beauty. SUMMARY:Sustainable Landscaping at Mount Auburn Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Dave Barnett recently retired from Mount Auburn Cemetery\, where he spent 28 years leading the transition to more ecologically friendly landscape design and maintenance practices. Dave will share examples of how the staff at Mount Auburn converted many areas of labor-intensive and carbon-intensive lawns to various lower-maintenance meadow and groundcover plantings. Most of these changes were small-scale projects\, ranging from a butterfly/pollinator garden to plantings of groundcovers\, perennials and shrubs that both reduced mowing needs and greatly enhanced the ecological value to pollinators\, birds and other wildlife. \nDave started at Mount Auburn Cemetery in 1993 as Director of Horticulture\, was promoted to Vice President of Operations & Horticulture in 1999\, and then became President & CEO in 2008. After 28 years at Mount Auburn\, he retired in September 2021. Prior to Mount Auburn\, Dave held various other positions in the field of public horticulture. His educational background includes a B.S. in Environmental Horticulture from the University of Connecticut\, and an M.S. in Environmental Horticulture and a Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of California\, Davis. Honors Dave has received include the American Public Gardens Association’s Honorary Life Member Award\, the Garden Club of America’s Distinguished Service Medal\, and the Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s Gold Medal. \nThe Concord Free Public Library is committed to providing everyone with unimpeded access to our resources\, programs\, and services. DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Library Poetry Series presents Julia Thacker and Hannah Larrabee\, with Q & A\, book-signings\, refreshments. \nJulia Thacker reads from her debut collection\, To Wildness (Waywiser Press\, 2025) winner of the 19th Anthony Hecht Poetry Prize chosen by the internationally acclaimed poet\, Paul Muldoon. The book was also a finalist in the National Poetry Series. \nIn recipes\, spells\, odes and elegies\, To Wildness conjures what has been lost and what remains\, These are poems of the body. They rub up against one another and knock elbows. In this collection\, the dead reside alongside the living. Ancestors roost in trees\, having forgotten language\, their coats inside out. Others sulk in the eaves\, their ears clogged with clover. The past made vivid renders an extravagant present and offers a balm to the isolation of the contemporary world. \nAs Joan Houlihan says in her enthusiastic endorsement\, “Teeming with image\, sensation and sound\, the poems in To Wildness tumble us into a glorious exuberance of catalog and character\, rural landscape and dark imaginings. (‘We ate ants peeled from the bark\, a rain of plums / when he rattled the trees. Lumbering\, Shackled.”) Ancestral voices speak from the grave; fabulist figures like the girl buried with a finch tell their stories; and contemporary ghosts only the narrator sees abound (Let me touch them as they pass.)” \nThe granddaughter of a Harlan County coal miner\, Julia Thacker was raised in Dayton Ohio. She first came to Massachusetts as a fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. She has also been the recipient of fellowships from the Radcliffe Institute\, the Corporation of Yaddo and the National Endowment for the Arts. Her poems appear in Bennington Review\, Gulf Coast\, The Massachusetts Review\, The New Republic and Pleiades. A portfolio of her work is included in the 25th anniversary issue of Poetry International. Julia has taught writing at Tufts University\, Radcliffe Seminars and as poet-in-residence in public schools throughout the state. In 2024\, she was an Edith Wharton Writer-in-Residence at The Mount. Hannah’s had work in Wild Roof\, Flypaper Lit\, River Heron Review\, Gertrude Press\, Maine Review\, Molecule\, Glass: A Journal of Poetry\, and elsewhere. She wrote poetry for the NASA James Webb Space Telescope program\, and she participated in an Arctic Circle Residency with artists and scientists in October 2022. Hannah received an MFA from the University of New Hampshire where she studied with Charles Simic. She’s currently an editor at Nixes Mate Review. \nThe Observable Universe arrives like a meteor singing the poetic landscape. See library website for daily hours. \nImmerse yourself in the beauty of local flowers as we await their blooming in later spring and summer. \nMost of the paintings in this show are based on photographs taken on walks throughout Concord\, including at Great Meadows\, the Buttrick Estate\, Concord Community Gardens\, the “wisteria house” across the street from the Main Library\, and even the Keyes Road municipal parking lot. \nMany of the works were created in 2024 for Flora(l) Portals\, my solo show in the skylit atrium of the Morse Institute Library in Natick\, MA. Because the pieces were hung from balcony railings and viewed from a distance\, I used canvases ranging from 3 to 6 feet in height—hence the name of that show\, as some of the paintings are almost the size of doors. \nI’m a largely self-taught artist\, born and raised in Massachusetts\, with my childhood spent in Arlington\, Sudbury\, and then Concord\, where I now reside. DESCRIPTION:Join author Julie Masis for a discussion of her memoir How My Grandfather Stole a Shoe and Survived the Holocaust in Ukraine. \nDuring World War II\, thousands of Moldovan Jews were imprisoned in the Obodovka ghetto\, located in the Romanian-occupied part of Ukraine. Unlike the areas under German control where Jews faced systematic extermination\, survival rates were marginally higher under Romanian occupation\, as soldiers there did not pursue mass executions with bullets. Despite this\, most of the ghetto’s inhabitants succumbed to starvation and disease during the harsh first winter. Journalist Julie Masis captures this lesser-known chapter of the Holocaust through the memories of her grandfather Shlomo Masis\, a survivor who lived to the remarkable age of 102. His recollections reveal stories of resilience\, including how some Ukrainians aided the Jews in the ghetto. Masis also delves into a poignant family legend about a German medic who reportedly fell in love with her Jewish grandmother. This narrative sheds light on both the horrors and the unexpected human connections that emerged during one of history’s darkest periods. \nJulie Masis is an award- winning journalist whose stories have been published in the Boston Globe\, the Christian Science Monitor\, the Globe and Mail\, the Jerusalem Post\, the Times of Israel and in other newspapers. She is also the editor and publisher of the Russian Boston Gazette\, a newspaper for Russian-speaking immigrants in Boston. See library website for daily hours. \nImmerse yourself in the beauty of local flowers as we await their blooming in later spring and summer. \nMost of the paintings in this show are based on photographs taken on walks throughout Concord\, including at Great Meadows\, the Buttrick Estate\, Concord Community Gardens\, the “wisteria house” across the street from the Main Library\, and even the Keyes Road municipal parking lot. \nMany of the works were created in 2024 for Flora(l) Portals\, my solo show in the skylit atrium of the Morse Institute Library in Natick\, MA. Because the pieces were hung from balcony railings and viewed from a distance\, I used canvases ranging from 3 to 6 feet in height—hence the name of that show\, as some of the paintings are almost the size of doors. \nI’m a largely self-taught artist\, born and raised in Massachusetts\, with my childhood spent in Arlington\, Sudbury\, and then Concord\, where I now reside. Although I’ve worked in multiple mediums\, my main focus the past few years has been floral paintings on textured canvas\, which I started while in Lois Andersen’s Monday Night Painters group at The Umbrella Arts Center. I am ever-appreciative of Lois\, the camaraderie of the group\, and the variety of local trails and publicly-accessible gardens that provide such an abundance of beauty. I hope my art can convey some of that beauty to others\, no matter the season\, and encourage exploration when the conditions are right! \nwww.maggiestanley.net

SUMMARY:The Odyssey: An Artistic Adaptation for 2 Actors
DESCRIPTION:What is the cost of our choices? Can love sustain across time\, war and distance? Can you ever really find your way home? \nJoin actors Stephen Collins and Poornima Kirby as they take on this three-thousand-year-old epic about the adventures of a wily and complicated traveler. Our two-person\, one-hour adaptation draws from multiple translations\, punctuated with poetry and sea-chanties to connect this age-old epic to our modern time. Told as a marital squabble between Odysseus and his wife\, Penelope\, the story weaves through Odysseus’ travels and to his arrival in Ithaca to face the fall-out of his absence\, and find out if he can really come home. With Stephen Collins as the funny\, damaged\, scheming Odysseus and Poornima flowing nimbly between Penelope\, Calypso\, Circe\, the Cyclops and many more characters – our artistic\, playful\, searching adaptation explores the universal human needs that run through this ancient poem – from the desire to belong\, to the hunger for vengeance\, to the hope of a second chance. \nThe Concord Free Public Library is committed to providing everyone with unimpeded access to our resources\, programs\, and services.
