Pandemic Memorial Heart

It is difficult to grasp how many people have passed from this world due to Covid 19, and most of them without the usual opportunities to be in the presence of loved ones during those last hours, days, and sometimes weeks. Making hearts to represent those lives, and contemplating the vastness of their numbers evokes a sense of awe. We hope this exercise and the art piece created will bring some solace as well to those left behind. Who knows, maybe the project brings solace as well to the many departed souls.

The heart will be 4 feet by 4 feet, with between 150 and 200 strips. We estimate having in the end about 10,000 hearts. The heart will be displayed mid to late February in the window of the West Concord Pharmacy. It’s permanent location is to be determined.

How to participate:

  • Use your own fade resistant red or black paper of good quality, OR pick up free strips from the bin on the porch of 21 Winthrop Street in West Concord.

  • exactly 2 inches wide, any length up to 10 inches

  • at least 5 hearts per inch, can be many more

  • Please write the number of hearts on the back of the paper, and, if you wish, your name and contact information.

  • Submit strips by either leaving them in the ART for ALL bin on the porch of 21 Winthrop Street in West Concord Center, or by mailing them to Village Art Room, 152 Commonwealth Ave., Concord, MA 01742

  • Apologies if your submission is not included. If we get enough submissions we will make a second heart.

  • Due date for the first heart: February 7thth. However, if we have enough interest and submissions, we will make another heart, no fixed deadline.
