Twenty Classic Film Noirs and Why They Are Good For You

January 28, 2019 @ 7:00 pm

- Free

Join Randall Warniers for a talk on Twenty Classic Film Noir films and why they are good for you!

Film noir is a term that describes certain moody low-budget B-movie Hollywood dramas of the 1940s and 1950s that feature hardboiled narratives, starkly graphic cinematography, down-on-their-luck characters, and an inescapable mood of menace, pessimism, crime, and despair. This talk will describe twenty superb examples of the film noir genre, made by some of the best screenwriters, producers, cinematographers, directors, and performers in the film industry. We won’t watch the films during the talk, but all are available on DVD, and every attendee will receive a list of the twenty selected films for future reference. If you are moved by the beautifully dark visual style of film noir, or if you want to see Humphrey Bogart, Barbara Stanwyck, Burt Lancaster, Audrey Totter, or Gloria Grahame work their movie magic, or if you are looking for a taut existential drama on a cold winter night, then this is the talk for you.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Concord Free Public Library.
