The setting is 1759, the beautiful, wealthy widow, Martha Dandridge Custis, has just wed a handsome and successful soldier from the American Revolution, George Washington. Unknowlingly, this union will lead Martha to the highest echelons of the infant United States allowing her to use her accute social sense to meet the expectations of her young country and define the role of First Lady.
