Lecture: Studios of Their Own: Women Artists in Boston 1880-1940 with Erica Hirshler PhD at Concord Art

March 21, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

There is nothing that men do that is not done by women now in Boston,” said one art critic in 1889. The city was a conspicuous leader in the emergence of women professionals in all disciplines, including the fine arts. Many, including Elizabeth Roberts, became accomplished painters, sculptors, and designers, producing work recognized across the country. Some chose traditional academic styles while others experimented with modernism. But no matter what aesthetic decisions they made, these artists all worked to balance their professional careers with the roles society expected them to play.

Join us for this lecture with Erica Hirshler PhD, Croll Senior Curator of American Paintings at Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The event begins at 6pm on Monday, March 21, 2022. Register for the Zoom Link. This event is free and open to the public.
