In conjunction with Concord’s Communities Organizing Against Racism (COAR) June Journeys events, First Connections will set up a story walk on the trail behind Gleason Library in Carlisle from June 18 to July 2. “The Ugly Vegetables,” by Grace Lin, is the true story of a Chinese-American girl whose mother grows unique vegetables in their backyard garden to use making a delicious soup that the whole neighborhood cannot resist. At the end of the walk, families can take home the recipe, a coloring page, and a list of other children’s picture books with Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander characters or themes. Additionally, families will be able to access a newly compiled list of Anti-Racism Resources for Caregivers and Children, which includes activities for parents and children, online learning sites for parents, and information on local organizations who are helping families start conversations with their young children about race and diversity in their communities and in the world.
