The Concord Free Public Library is celebrating June Journeys with Communities Organizing Against Racism (COAR) by sharing a StoryWalk on the Main Library lawn from June 1st through June 30th. The StoryWalk features Voice of Freedom: Fannie Lou Hamer, Spirit of the Civil Rights Movement by Carole Boston Weatherford and illustrated by Ekua Holmes.

Featuring stunning mixed-media art and stirring poems, Voice of Freedom celebrates civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer’s life with a message of hope, determination, and strength. Despite fierce prejudice and abuse, even being beaten to within an inch of her life, Fannie Lou Hamer was a champion of civil rights from the 1950s until her death in 1977. The book won the 2016 Caldecott Honor award as well as the 2016 Robert F. Sibert Honor.
