Concord Festival of Authors: Young Adult Writers

The Friends of the Concord Free Public Library present Young Adult Writers Susan Kaplan Carlton, Jennifer De Leon, and Marcella Pixley!

Susan Kaplan Carlton teaches writing at Boston University. Her latest novel, In the Neighborhood of True, has been named a Best Book of the Year by Amazon, received a starred review in Publishers Weekly, and scored 10/10 in YOYA. Carlton’s writing has appeared in Self, Elle, Mademoiselle, Seventeen, Parents, The Boston Globe, and elsewhere. She is also the author of the young adult novel Love & Haight, which was named a Best Book for Young Adults by YALSA and a Best Book by the Children’s Book Committee at Bank Street Books.

Jennifer De Leon is the author of Don’t Ask Me Where I’m From (Atheneum/Simon & Schuster, August 2020) and the editor of Wise Latinas (University of Nebraska Press). An Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at Framingham State University, and a GrubStreet instructor and board member, she has published prose in over a dozen literary journals, including Ploughshares, Iowa Review, and Michigan Quarterly Review. Her essay collection, White Space: Essays on Culture, Race, & Writing, will be published by UMass Press in Spring 2021. She lives outside of Boston with her husband two sons.

Marcella Pixley teaches eighth grade Language Arts at the Carlisle Public Schools. Her poetry has been published in literary journals such as Prairie Schooner, Feminist Studies, Sow’s Ear Poetry Review and Poet Lore, and she has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Ms. Pixley has written four acclaimed books for children that explore issues of mental health and family dynamics. Freak (FSG 2007) received four starred reviews and was named a Kirkus Best Book of the Year, Without Tess (FSG 2011) was a Junior Library Guild selection, and Ready To Fall (FSG 2017) was nominated for a Teen Choice Award. Her most recent novel, Trowbridge Road (Candlewick 2020) comes out in October. It has been named a Best Book of 2020 by Pernille Ripp and is a Junior Library Guild selection. When she is not writing stories, Ms. Pixley teaches 8th grade Language Arts at Carlisle Public Schools. She is a graduate of Vassar College, University of Tennessee and Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College.
